Title: Mods not active

Jakob. - June 23, 2008 02:30 PM (GMT)
What is the average amount of posts and activity you require of your moderators?

When is it fine to contact then and ask them to be more active?

Esaul - June 23, 2008 03:20 PM (GMT)
Well unless they say something to you, I think that after a week of little posting you should check in on them and ask them to be a little more active

Desire - June 23, 2008 05:16 PM (GMT)
My three mods were averaging about 2 posts a day if that...

Sakura, she's on every now and than but I'm sticking with her.

One of them made like 80 posts in the first day he was there and hasn't been seen in about 10 days or so. I'm thinking about de-modding him if he doesn't answer my PM tonight that I sent out a few days ago.

Luke, he's alright. Not active really but checks up on the forum.

I'm looking for people to fill in the hole's and people to kick out. Hopefully that get's better and changes in the upcoming days.

I haven't calculated my mod's posts, but I like my mods to at least be online a lot, maybe not post a bunch but be online a bunch.

Ambient - June 23, 2008 07:19 PM (GMT)
Moderators, and indeed any member of staff does necessarily have to post to be 'active'. As long as they do their job (and check on the forum regularly) then being active in terms of posts per day is irrelevant, That's my stance anyway.

Jakob. - June 23, 2008 07:34 PM (GMT)
True, Ambient, but the posting is still is job they have to do. Moderators old job were to keep an eye on the community, but now we expect them to post more than usual, or at least, most people do.

I agree in parts with what you are saying, but it does depend on the type of moderator they are, if they moderate a single forum or a small group of forums you'd expect them to be active in that area of the forum. However, Community Moderators (or Global Moderators) are needed to moderate the community, which often requires activity in terms of posting. You have to ask them though if they aren't active if they have any troubles with Too much work or exams.

In my opinion, If a moderator does not visit the board for one week then they should be fired, unless they have strict reason not to (ie Holiday, Unable to connect to the Internet etc.). Anyway, we all know for posts that Quality is far better for the forum than Quantity if the forum is already established.

First off make sure the people you are hiring have a decent amount of posts before you even consider them for the job. On here if you do not have at least fifty posts when posting an application then don't bother as I know for a fact we won't even consider you for anything.

Lot of the inactive staff issues stems from hiring the wrong people as some take on too much and don't realize it and others take on a job just to say they were staff on such and such board. that's a big issue on boards like this one where it's a well known and reputable board and could influence whether or not t hey get hired elsewhere.

if staff are going inactive and have not posting a reason for doing so then I tend to fire after a few days of not showing up but that's after I ask what's going on first before I do such a thing.

Internet connection issues keeping staff away is easy to spot if you know where they work at as they should have the last log in date and time be pretty much the same everywhere they are staff at.

I haven't had inactive staff issues here or had to fire anyone in quite a while so I guess we are doing something right. :P

On a very active forum I don't expect posts, I expect moderation.

On a small inactive forum, they should be leaders in posting and threads.

Unless they're not regular attenders on the forum for periods longer than 5 days, I wouldn't bounce in and ask them to sharpen up and be more active.

A friendly pm, asking how they are? busy lifestyle or that might be more appreciative. I know myself, I Bluezone asked me to be more active on Madads, I'd probably lose the bap and send him a massive pm explaining that I'm juggling 3 jobs, and heading on holidays.
Whereas if BZ pm'd me asking how I was, and was I busy - I'd actually explain things to him in a more civilised way. ^_^

Staff don't like to admit being inactive if they're up to their eyeballs. We try to make time for forums, but sleep comes first.

Bluezone777 - June 26, 2008 12:02 PM (GMT)
the important thing for me is knowing what's going on and keep good communication going. if the reason is reasonable and the length of absence is reasonable then I don't have a problem.

It's when someone goes inactive and says nothing anywhere that annoys me as I don't know what to make of their inactivity and they are prone to getting fired more if they refuse to say they are inactive and for how long either through the staff room or PM.

And I have acted like I was never told if someone went inactive when they did somewhere in the staff room mostly out of forgetting so for me just reminding me that you did indeed say that you were going to be inactive and where is all I need.

Treat people with respect and they will do the same to you is a good policy that I personally follow. :D

Enough for me to notice they're actually there.

If they have been on for a few days but haven't posted. I just ask them via PM what's up and why they're not being active.

I don't worry about it so much because if people slack now and then for whatever reason I can probably manage it myself for a little while until they're done with whatever they're doing.

Desire - June 28, 2008 06:56 PM (GMT)
I just fired 2 of my staff right now, I'm sticking with Sakura :D.

I PMed both of them a few times, asked them for suggestions in the staff room and none of them answered. Looks like I'm in line for some new staff.

.Leon - June 28, 2008 10:50 PM (GMT)
Just got to give them reasons to be.
